Host, “Ivory Tower”, WCNY-TV. For the past 17 years, I have been the substitute host of this public affairs show airing on Fridays at 5 p.m. It’s a roundtable discussion local academics talking about the news. I usually coordinate and host around 12 shows a year.
ReadyReporter: For several years I wrote a blog and twitter feed on ways reporters can better use online sources to work quicker, smarter and better. I still tweet from @ReadyReporter . While I don’t keep the blog up, much of the content — tips on good resources, ways to find sources, story leads and more– is still valid, see here.
Meredith Professor: My project focused on finding and reviewing online resources for journalism and developig teaching modules and online units to help students and faculty learn to use these new tools. While the internet and social media have changed enough to make these dated, I keep some resources for reporters at this JTools website.
Community Educator/Speaker: I am still available for educational seminars civic and community groups about free speech. While I was the Director of the Tully Center for Free Speech, I met with many Rotary Clubs and library groups, telling stories of several Central New Yorkers who put themselves on the line for free speech.
Academic Research
Author: Secret Justice: Off Base. Fighting for Access to Military Dockets and Court Proceedings. Working with the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, in 2008 Tully Center Researcher Colleen Keltz and I documented the difficulty that citizens and journalists have in finding out about dockets, hearings and trials in the military justice system. The study was shared with top military officials and Congress in hopes that they would ensure more access to the military justice system. The Coast Guard has made changes since the report was issued.
